Effects of Amphotericin B on Germ tube Formation in Candida albicans

Abstract
Forty-five strains of Candida species (40 Candida albicans. A Candida tropicalis. 1 Candida glabrata) isolated from various clinical specimens during a 2-month period were tested for the evaluation susceptibility to amphotericin B. Three strains
among
clinical isolates showing 0.5¥ìg/ml of minimal inhibitory concentration and one ATCC strain(ATCC 14053) as control were subjected for the further characterization of germ tube formation from blastospores of Candida albicans.
Minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of amphotericin B to Candida spp. ranged 0.1¥ìg/ml to 5¥ìg/ml, germ tube formation from blastospores of Candida albicans could be inhibited at minimal and subinhibitory concentration of amphotericin B.
These results suggest the possibility that minimal and subinhibtory concentration of Amphotericin B may inhibit the adherence of Candida albicans to host tissue and affect the pathogenicity of Candida albicans to the host.
